The newspaper report was discussed in a recent article published by The Edge Markets. “Today’s gains also followed a report in the Taipei-based Economic Daily News that Nintendo might launch a new version of its Switch console early next year, citing unidentified people in the supply chain,” reads the piece. “A more powerful version of the console has been rumoured in the past.”
It makes sense - rumors concerning a new Switch model have been circulating since 2018. Also, according to Ace Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda, the console will be largely unaffected by next-gen machines produced by its competitors, meaning that a new iteration of the popular system could capitalize on its ubiquitous position in the current video game hardware market. “Even with the launch of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, sales of Switch will remain strong,” he said. “We believe that sales of game consoles are determined by their design and style, and the advantage of Switch, which can be played by anyone at any time anywhere, will not change.” Yasuda went on to state that he predicts the Switch will finish out the year having sold a minimum of 23 million units - a whopping 4 million more consoles than Nintendo’s own prediction of 19 million. As of earlier this month, lifetime sales for the Nintendo Switch had reached an immense 61.44 million units worldwide. Meanwhile, Nintendo had six games in the top 10 just two weeks ago, controlling a massive 60% of the bestsellers list. Among these games was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which managed to make its way back to number one five whole months after it initially launched.
